After fruitlessly listening to more radio this month than I have in years in hopes of hearing Magic Rainbows, I finally caught it this evening on 94.5. This is a Hot AC station that switched from AC last year and has made quite an effort to become somewhat hip. Since I heard it late Saturday night, I don't know how good the chances are of it being played during the day, but it was nice to hear some Cookie. I've heard it can take a while for these things to get outside of major metropolitan areas and truthfully I have not heard a CS on the radio since Ruben and even he didn't get much airplay after the first week or so.

I don't know if it is the same everywhere else, but I have made some observations from listening to the radio so much.

Many of the program directors here are very reluctant to change their playlists. Ever. On the alt-rock station they play Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden as often as any new artist. However, since that is right up Cookie's alley maybe they will make a place for him come fall.

The Top 40 station has an odd fascination with early '90s crap. They played Baby Got Back during drive time every day for over a month. I have heard MC Hammer on there. And I have heard LFO on there twice, which is the worst boy band ever to exist. The lyrics to their one hit single are so bad they are downright Satanic. I figure with all this crap floating around a little Magic Rainbow would be an improvement.

Suddenly Collective Soul is very popular again. I hear them all the time. Especially The World I Know. I wonder if David Cook has anything at all to do with this.

That's funny that the Top 40 station plays Baby Got Back and MC Hammer. Hilarious!
I heard The World I Know going through the Atlanta airport Friday morning (Collective Soul's version - not DC's).

Ugh, a lot of times in the Atlanta radio market during commute times, it's hard to hear any music whatsoever. Several of the stations I listen to are all about the radio personalities which I get to some extent - some of them are actually entertaining. However, they are only playing a couple of songs an hour at most.

To put it in perspective the Q (103.7) has "Deja Q" moments about once or twice an hour where they play old songs.
However, they don't always identify it that way. Sometimes they just pipe in old songs for the heck of it.

I've been listening to 94.5 like mad and I haven't heard it again, though. I think the alt-rock station is officially a '90s nostalgia station because it's become increasingly rare to find anything on there from before 1998. So I'm not sure how much luck David will have with them eventually.
