Finally, Jason's chance to sing 'Crazy'
Jason Castro got David Archuleta to stay out late -- way late, like 1 a.m. (All part of the go-kart extravaganza -- the venue even stayed open late for the Idols.) And Archie’s dad was encouraging him to hang with the guys. "He’s gotten kind of comfortable now," Castro says of his Idol-mate.
But Castro admits it’s perhaps he who is most misunderstood among the group. "Somebody (reportedly Kimberley Locke in an interview) said I was dumb as a bag of rocks," he says (though he insists he reads very little of his own press, except for the occasional glowing dispatch forwarded over e-mail by his mom). "That’s foolish. They don’t even know me." Like, they probably don’t know that the former Texas A&M student scored 1340 on his SATs "without even studying." He says he’s like Uh-Huh in The Little Rascals, who said: "Actually, I've always had a rather extensive vocabulary, not to mention a phenomenal grasp of grammar and a superlative command of syntax. I simply chose not to employ them." Or Mark Twain (paraphrased): "It’s better to remain quiet and let people think you’re stupid than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."
The Vans-clad Castro is refreshingly candid: "I have no record-label talks. 19 (Entertainment) told me one label showed a little interest but they weren’t sure it would turn into anything." No matter. Castro plans to make music 2008-style, with or without a record deal. So he’s writing his typical acoustic-heavy songs -- some "happy, beachy," others meatier -- in the meantime, though he’s having a hard time getting work done on tour. "We’re all in cramped quarters. It’s not really conducive" to the creative process. He’s looking forward to singing his audition song, Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy, tonight. (It never aired during the show because Idol couldn’t get clearance.) Retooled in the style of Ray LaMontagne, "it fits me really well."
What he’s not so jazzed about: the final group number, Don't Stop the Music. (The group stuff, incidentally, was his parents’ favorite part of the show.) "It’s not a song I would ever sing. I feel awkward singing it. But it’s fun." -- O.B.

i can't believe the record stuff. it's depressing.

If it is true that she did make such a comment, I am very sorry to hear that she did. This is very surprising that it would come from her.

I really really really hope Jason gets signed! His sound is so distinct and his style is rather popular nowadays. I'll be very disappointed if he doesn't get a record deal. Really.

LOL...that totally cracked me up for some reason...i could so picture him saying it, too. gotta admit Jason grew on me throughout the season.

I can imagine major labels would not want to do much with Jason. I don't trust him with 19, either. Jason Castro is Jason Castro. He's adorable and good at what he does but he wouldn't really be able to adapt to any kind of swanky marketing or PR plan. He is also VERY new to performing solo and had done so only a few times before Idol. I think he would do great on an indie label where he would be allowed to be himself and develop a following. He has Dreadheads who will follow him anywhere and I think if the DLs for the season were released someone would have to take an interest in him.
That said, it really saddened me that KLo's comment got around to Jason because it was so cruel and uncalled for and he really didn't need to hear it. I can't imagine Jason ever saying a mean word about anyone.

when I first heard about the remark about Jason's intelligence purportedly made by Kimberly Locke, I was moved to comment on that thread about how cruel, classless, and down-right ignorant such a statement is. Coming from Texas, and having a child who has just got through the process of applying to and being accepted by colleges in this state, I know first hand that to be accepted to Texas A&M you have to be very, very bright and accomplished academically. Now this post proves that truth with regard to Jason. What college did Ms. Locke attend? Certainly not charm school.
I think it is just plain uncalled-for to bash someone you don't know, who has done you no harm, and who is a completely decent person. I am also sad he learned of this, but somehow I think he is secure enough to "consider the source" and not take it to heart.
He is a delightful guy, I liked him from the start, and wish him all the best. He will be a success because he is smart, talented, agreeable, and easy to direct and work alongside. I believe he will make a mark in the world and it will be a lasting one.

Oh, my - the Head Dreadhead is a word nerd too!

I love it. He's a smart guy - he'll be fine when it comes to the music biz. He's got a good head on his shoulders with brains to match; when he wants to get picked up by a label, he will. He's better than most of the crap you see on MTV and VH1 these days anyway.

I wanna sign Jason to my record label! Oh wait... I don't have a record label. But it's the sentiment, right?
This makes me really mad. Jason is awesome! I hope someone signs him soon.

Ok, I am going to try and be as tactful as possible when it comes to Kimberly Locke. And I will support my opinion (b/c its not fact in the sense of I know for 100%, and I would never claim such). So, here it goes.
I happen to be friends -thru my ex-boyfriend- with Charlie Grigsby of season two. He's a sweet guy that I've had the pleasure of both talking to on the phone and working with. My club sponsered a concert at my community college with Charlie as the main performer. It rocked! (His album is really good, its a shame it never got picked up.) He was great to work with and I have the utmost respect for him.
Charlie's website (which is no longer in existence) made some claims against Kim Locke, that if true, lead me to believe she is a classless person all the way around. All I can say is I've met Charlie, my ex knew him for years before Idol, and I think he is an honest person. I don't know Kim Locke. I don't care to know her either. However, to be so rude about Jason just supports the classlessness even more.
Okay...I don't want to get in trouble for posting this. I was just trying to say that she isn't the best source when it comes to judging someone.
(And yes...don't think it didn't cross my mind that since Charlie was on season 2 with Kim Caldwell...could I meet DC???? Nah...I wouldn't impost on him like that.

I really, really hate that Jason hasn't been signed yet. I love his style of music, and I really think that he could be marketable right now

If KLC can get a record deal, why can't Jason or MICHAEL JOHNS for that matter?? Michael Johns is an amazing performer and songwriter (listen to his album "Future Unknown" with his band The Rising if you want an example, it's almost up to par with AH).

I always really liked Jason too - I really enjoy his "chilled" attitude and I don't doubt for a minute that he's really intelligent. I have a friend that went to Texas A and M and they simply don't admit dummies. I can see him (and I hope I'm right) going the more independent record route, sorta kinda like Elliott Yamin (although I'm ignorant to those details, I get the feeling he had much more creative control) I'd hate to see a major label manipulate his style into something he's not... he'll be fine, we just need to be patient. Remember how far he got - he obviously had lots of people voting for him.

I wasn't a huge fan of his music (unless I am sitting at a coffee house somewhere) but I loved his personality. He just seems like such a sweet guy.

Michael Johns will get a deal... no worries.
