As the nerve is stimulated, you will experience a brief electrical shock. This may feel uncomfortable, but it usually isn’t painful. The entire procedure usually takes about 20-30 minutes to complete. In some cases, nerves may be tested in multiple locations, which can make the procedure take slightly longer.

To prepare for an EMG, please do the following:
- Bathe or shower on the day of the test; wash arms and legs well to remove body oils.
- Don’t use lotion, bath oils or creams.
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes, and remember to bring shorts and a short-sleeved or sleeveless shirt.
How long does it take to get the results of a nerve conduction test?
When will I get the results? The results are sent to the doctor that referred you for the test and are usually available within seven days.
