How does a PV vent work?
A device, usually referred to as a “P/V vent,” installed at the discharge end of a vent pipe connected to a gasoline storage tank, to regulate the pressure at which vapor is allowed to escape from the tank, and the vacuum at which outside air is allowed to enter the tank.

The purpose of vapour return systems is to ensure that cargo vapours are not released to the atmosphere. Vapour return lines on chemical tankers are either connected to the vessel’s PV line or, if the vessel is fitted with an inert gas system, to an extension of that system.
What is inerting and purging?
Inerting and purging refer to replacing the atmosphere in a line, vessel or other area with an inert atmosphere, eg the space above liquid fuel in a fuel tank, to reduce the likelihood of combustion. Purging of supply lines, pipelines and tanks is a common step before commencing production or prior to shutdown.
How do you calibrate a PSV?
Calibration Procedure:
- Determine the set point of the pressure gauge.
- After performing the set up above, ensure that there is no leak.
- Increase the pressure until a sudden release or pop action is observed.
- Check the displayed pressure reading in the standard and record in your Measurement Data Sheet (MDS).
What is the flow velocity setting for HV valve?

What is close loading?
The aim of closed loading is to keep gases clear of cargo deck. The cargo is not visible to the crew at stage of loading. The use of vapour return line prevents any gas release to the atmosphere. Special precautions are necessary onboard a chemical tanker during closed loading of various grade liquid chemicals.
